Who can foster a child

Who can foster with Wholistic? We welcome people from all walks of life — single or partnered, renters or homeowners, from every cultural, religious and ethnic background. What matters most is your capacity to care, connect, and provide a safe, loving space for a child to belong.

Am I Suitable to Foster a Child?

If you care deeply about children, are open to learning, and want to make a difference — the answer is likely yes.

At Wholistic Fostering, we know there are a lot of myths around who can become a foster carer. The truth is: there’s no single ‘ideal’ background. Our foster carers come from all walks of life — and that diversity is one of our greatest strengths.

Because every child is different, we need foster carers who bring a variety of life experiences, family structures, cultural perspectives, and personal strengths to the table. What matters most is your ability to offer a safe, stable, and nurturing home — especially to children and young people from African, Caribbean, or multiracial backgrounds.

What We Look For in a Foster Carer

We carry out a thorough assessment process to ensure fostering is right for you and for the children we support. Here’s what we consider:

  • Your ability to provide a safe, loving, and stable home
  • Willingness to learn and work as part of a professional team
  • Your background, lifestyle, and health — including any relevant personal experiences
  • Your values, personality, and commitment to supporting a child’s identity and wellbeing
  • Experience caring for children (this could be through parenting, work, or volunteering)

Your home environment — each foster child needs a bedroom of their own

Some Basic Requirements

To foster with Wholistic, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have British citizenship or indefinite leave to remain
  • Be available to meet the needs of a child, either through flexible work or being home full-time
  • Have a spare bedroom for a foster child
  • Be open to reflection, training and ongoing support

What Doesn’t Matter

  • Your relationship status — single, married, divorced, cohabiting, LGBTQ+… all are welcome
  • Your home ownership status — renters can foster too
  • Your religion or background
  • Whether you have children of your own or not

What matters is your ability to show up with compassion, consistency, cultural understanding, and a willingness to grow.

You already have what it takes to foster

You don’t need to be a parent or have worked with children professionally to consider fostering. Life experience, personal resilience and the ability to connect with others are powerful foundations — and the children we support need people like you.

Whether you’ve raised your own children, supported relatives, mentored young people, or simply have a calm and caring presence that others trust — these are all signs that you could make an incredible foster carer.

Many of our carers have transferred skills from a wide range of careers, including healthcare, education, community work and customer service. Others bring insight from informal caregiving, faith communities or their own upbringing.

If you’ve ever helped guide, support or care for someone — even informally — you already understand more than you think. And remember, you won’t be doing it alone. We provide in-depth, culturally aware training and ongoing support to help you grow into the role with confidence.

Be a strong advocate for your foster child’s wellbeing, growth and future

Foster carers play a vital role in creating safe, nurturing homes where children can thrive — not just physically, but emotionally, culturally and academically too.

At Wholistic Fostering, we champion foster carers who go the extra mile to advocate for their child’s health, education and overall wellbeing. With our full support behind you, you’ll help build the foundation for their long-term success — in school, in life, and in their identity.

We offer tailored, culturally grounded training and development, helping you grow in confidence and feel equipped to make informed decisions in the child’s best interest. You’ll also have access to a local support network of other carers, support groups, and regular events to connect and share experience.

If you smoke or vape, it doesn’t automatically prevent you from fostering — but there are some national guidelines around which children you may be matched with. We’ll talk you through what’s possible.

With your life experience, your commitment to our community, and our support every step of the way, you’ll become a powerful advocate and role model for the child in your care.
