Fostering with a Disability

Your ability to care is what matters most.

If you live with a disability – whether physical, sensory, or psychological – you can still become a foster carer.

You Can Foster – Disability Doesn’t Define Your Potential

We believe people from all walks of life can offer a nurturing, stable home to children in need. Disability does not disqualify you. What matters most is your capacity to provide a safe, caring environment.

We take time to understand your individual needs and circumstances, and we provide the right support so that you can thrive as a foster carer.

What to Expect During the Application Process

The fostering application process typically takes around 4 months, although in some situations we can fast-track it to just 8 weeks. During this time, we’ll get to know you – including how your disability affects your daily life – so we can ensure a good match and build a support plan that works for you and any future foster child.

Having a disability won’t count against you in the process. In fact, your lived experiences may offer valuable insight, empathy, and resilience – all of which are qualities that help children feel safe and understood.

Disability Benefits and Fostering

If you receive benefits such as Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment, these are not affected by the fostering allowance. You’ll continue receiving your disability-related support alongside the financial support offered for caring for a foster child.

Fostering is for Everyone

We actively welcome applications from people of all physical abilities, cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and family situations. Whether you're single, married, renting, or retired – we look at your ability to care, not your circumstances.

Many of our carers have disabilities and continue to provide fantastic care to children of all ages. Some foster children have disabilities or complex needs of their own, and seeing carers who embrace life with a disability can offer them a positive, relatable role model.

Support Tailored to You

We’re committed to making fostering as inclusive as possible. From day one, you’ll have access to:

  • A dedicated supervising social worker
  • Ongoing tailored training
  • Local support groups and peer networks
  • 24/7 professional support
  • Help with matching you with the right child or young person

Together, we’ll explore which type of fostering best suits your lifestyle. For some, this may mean fostering teenagers who are more independent. For others, short breaks or specialist fostering may be a better fit.

Whatever your path, we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Ready to Make a Difference?

Living with a disability brings strength, resilience, and patience – all of which are essential qualities in fostering. If you have space in your home and in your heart, we’d love to hear from you.
