Can I Foster as a Single Person?

Can I Foster as a Single Person? Absolutely.

At Wholistic Fostering, we believe great foster carers come from all walks of life – and yes, that includes single people. You don’t need to be married or in a relationship to offer a safe, loving and nurturing home to a child who needs it. If you’re supportive, patient and ready to make a real difference, you’ve already got what it takes to start your fostering journey. Whether you're male or female, with or without your own children, your relationship status will never be a barrier to fostering.

Being Single Won’t Hold You Back

Many of our amazing foster carers are single – some are single parents, others are single individuals with a passion for helping children thrive. If you’ve cared for children in any way – maybe through work, family, or volunteering – that experience is valuable and will be welcomed.

You don’t need to own your home or have a perfect background. What matters most is that you can provide:

  • A spare bedroom (each foster child must have their own space)
  • Emotional stability

A safe and welcoming environment

Parenting Is a Skill – And You’ve Got It

If you’re already a single parent, you might have felt limited by work hours or childcare demands – but these are the very qualities that make you a great candidate for fostering. You understand children’s needs, routines and challenges, and you’re used to putting someone else first.

We’ll support you every step of the way – with expert training, 24/7 guidance, and financial support to help cover the cost of caring for a child.

Flexible Fostering Options for Single People

Fostering is a big commitment, but it’s also flexible. If your work or lifestyle doesn’t currently allow for full-time fostering, you might consider:

  • Respite fostering – caring for children short-term to give other carers a break
  • School holiday placements – perfect if you work in education or have availability during breaks
  • Emergency placements – if you have flexibility and want to provide immediate, short-term care

These options still make a lasting difference – and could be a stepping stone to more permanent roles in the future.

You're Never Alone

Even if you foster solo, you're never unsupported. As part of the Wholistic Fostering family, you’ll have:

  • A dedicated Supervising Social Worker
  • 24/7 support line
  • Peer support from local foster carers
  • Ongoing professional training
  • Regular local events to help you feel connected

We’re here to help you succeed, grow and feel confident in your role – every step of the way.
