Essential Pre-Approval Training for Prospective Foster Carers

This is our free, pre-approval training programme for all prospective foster carers. Whether you join us online or in person, you’ll gain vital knowledge and insight into what fostering really involves — and how to confidently begin your journey.

What is Tools to Foster?

Tools to Foster is our version of the nationally recognised Skills to Foster course. It’s a required part of the assessment process and takes place before you attend Panel.

This course equips you with the practical understanding, mindset, and confidence to step into the role of a foster carer — and supports you in reflecting on how fostering will impact your life and your family.

You’ll also meet other prospective foster carers during the course, giving you the chance to share experiences and start building your own fostering community.

What You'll Learn

Delivered by experienced trainers and fostering professionals, Tools to Foster covers a range of essential topics, including:

  • What do foster carers do?
Understand the day-to-day role and responsibilities of a foster carer.

  • Understanding children in foster care
Explore the impact of trauma, neglect, and separation on child development.

  • Attachment and child development
Learn how different attachment styles affect behaviour and how to respond supportively.

  • Safe and reflective caregiving
We cover safer caring, risk awareness, and how to create a nurturing environment.

  • Transitions and placement stability
Understand how to help children manage change and build resilience.

  • Working with professionals
Learn about your role as part of a wider team around the child — including social workers, teachers and therapists.

  • Diversity and identity
Explore how to support children from different cultural, ethnic or faith backgrounds in an inclusive, respectful way.

The impact on your family
We help you think through how fostering will affect your own children and extended family — and how to support them too.

What Happens Next?

Once you’ve completed Tools to Foster, your learning will help inform the remainder of your Form F assessment. It also prepares you for your Panel interview, where your readiness to foster will be discussed.

After approval, your journey doesn’t stop there. You'll access a full programme of ongoing training, including:

  • Post-approval core training (e.g., safeguarding, first aid, reporting and recording)
  • Specialist courses tailored to your placements, such as:
    • Supporting children with Autism or additional needs
    • Parent and child fostering
    • Therapeutic approaches
    • Trauma and attachment in adolescents

At Wholistic Fostering, learning never stops — and we’ll be with you every step of the way.
